Catacombe di San Gaudioso

History

The catacomb structure, probably formed on the site of a pre-existing Greco-Roman necropolis, developed in the then uninhabited valley of Health where, according to tradition, had found burial Saint Gaudioso, a North African bishop shipwrecked in Naples and lived here until his death after founding a monastery and gaining fame for holiness. Access to the catacombs is in the crypt, under the raised presbytery of the church dedicated to the Madonna della Sanità. The Neapolitan actor Antonio De Curtis, Totò, was originally from the Rione Sanità and frequented his catacombs, where there is a fresco of death that wins over everything that probably inspired Totò his poem ‘At level.
