Napoli sotterranea

A narrow but suggestive and characteristic place of the city of Naples. Between tunnels, tuff and shadow you can retrace, underground, the history of this wonderful city, fascinating and mysterious.

“Napoli Sotterranea” is one of the main testimonies of the origins of Naples, it is the place from which the Greeks derived the materials for the first city founded and it is the place that preserves four cisterns and the remains of a Roman aqueduct. From the origins of the city you pass to an almost contemporary past, the signs of a war and memories of the pain of a people intimidated by weapons and the submission of a dictator. The above-mentioned site of the mystery was also a refuge for civilians frightened during World War II.

The route begins with stairs leading to the underground, where it is difficult to begin to imagine the heritage they hide. On the stairs some spots, legend has it that he tells of a woman who had to give birth there while he was fleeing from the bombing. Continue until you reach the first stage: the first cistern. Cisterns and aqueducts were fundamental elements for the transit and diffusion of a primary good, such as water, in ancient cities. You continue through tunnels, narrow environments and large spaces that allow you to retrace the history and experience of this hidden place. During the walk you can see graffiti, requests for help, prayers and pieces of memories that lead back to the panic experienced during the bombing. The tension experienced in that bloody world conflict is still tangible. We can imagine families, women with children and couples of lovers who ran to shelter with stocks of primary goods and poor materials to build the necessary to survive. To enter more into the experience of this fascinating place and away from the common imagination you can make a very impressive experiment: find yourself in one of these spaces completely in darkness and silence. In that period of time it seems that the walls speak and tell everything that has not been said and cannot be explained. Incredible can be the sensation caused by the set of factors that push the visitor to a strong moment of introspective and personal emotionality that will enrich his soul and will make sure that he can bring the memory of it for a long time in his life.
