Fontana del Gigante

History

The Fontana del Gigante is one of the monumental fountains of Naples at the beginning of the seventeenth century; it is located in via Partenope, not far from the Castel dell’Ovo.

The fountain is articulated by three round arches, above which are placed the great coats of arms that symbolize the city, the viceroys of Naples and also the king of that historical period. In the central arch there is the cup that is supported by two marine animals, while the statues in the remaining two lateral arches represent river gods that hold two sea monsters between their hands. The two statues (the caryatids) are placed at the end of the last arches: they are intent on holding cornucopiae.
